DESCRIPTION: Military, police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, first-line responders all have to shut down their emotions to be successful at their jobs. However, these skills often contribute to an emotional disconnection at home with their significant other. Emotionally Focused Therapy is a powerful tool to help couples when a partner in the couple experiences high demand on-the-job to help with high tension under regulation or emotional numbing and over regulation of emotion. Our attempts as therapists in understanding and being with either/both coping strategies can backfire resulting in a fragile alliance and difficulty getting a depth of experiencing necessary to obtain the strong outcomes associated with EFT. Learn skills to rely on as you face couples who are are under massive stress that is impacting their relationships, so you can help those couples utilized their relationship as a safe haven and secure base.
Through demonstration, videotape, and practice, therapists will learn how to openly engage withdrawers from a place of curiosity instead of it feeling like an inquisition. Integrating concepts from George’s book Sacred Stress, participants will learn how to lean into the withdrawer’s blocks to engagement and discover that blocks can be transformed into bridges.
Drawing on EFT and George Faller’s book, Sacred Stress, participants will:

Complete EFT Treatment with a Military Couple
Sarah presented about EFT with a military couple and showed video footage of an actual veteran couple undergoing Stages One and Two. We saw the couple engage in both de-escalation of the negative cycle (Stage One) and emotional bonding that lead to second order change (Stage Two). Also, we learned about how emotional restriction (which is common in military couples) affects the connection/bond between partners and how as a therapist, we can get underneath the restriction and amplify emotion in the room.
Cost for this event was: $25.

MORE ABOUT EFT
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is the leading approach to couples therapy based on years of research into bonding and attachment. EFT is present process, systemic and experiential which sets it apart from other approaches and makes it more effective in creating lasting shifts. Attachment and secure bonding gives us a target of change and corrective experiences provides a process of lasting change. EFT is not about negotiating about conflict but rather hones in on the deeper feelings and meaning within each partner and the development of seeing and understanding each other to develop safety, security and true intimacy. As human beings, we are all hard-wired for connection. EFT taps into our most basic human needs so each partner can feel more safe, connected and secure with both self and sweetheart. EFT is empirically validated and has been shown to be highly effective with even the most difficult relationships.
